ICISF -
International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc

We are excited to announce our strategic partnership with the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). ICISF is dedicated to providing resources and tools to support those affected by critical incidents, with a focus on helping individuals return to normal functioning through Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and other services. Critical incident stress can impact anyone, in any environment, and the emotional, physical, and spiritual trauma can last long after the event. If left unaddressed, these effects can disrupt families and communities. Unfortunately, many individuals are inadequately trained to cope with or provide the necessary support after a critical incident.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is a method designed to help first responders and others affected by critical incidents. CISM is a peer-driven process that prepares individuals to address emotional or physical challenges before, during, and after an event, helping them continue to perform their duties or return to a normal life.

The International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that offers training and resources for those interested in joining a crisis management team or supporting recovery efforts. Their mission is to be the global leader in providing education, training, consultation, and support services for comprehensive crisis intervention and disaster behavioral health services to emergency responders, other professions, organizations, and communities worldwide. For more information, please visit the website: https://icisf.org

“This is not about weakness.”

Repeated exposure to critical incidents can create cumulative stress and trauma—and what many first responders feel afterward can be a normal response to abnormal exposure. Early intervention matters. Peer support, evidence-informed care, and a culture that encourages help-seeking can strengthen resilience and keep teams healthy over the long term.

“Healing takes courage.”

Sometimes the bravest step is talking to someone, accepting support, or checking in with a teammate. Building resilient organizations means normalizing care, strengthening peer support, and using evidence-informed approaches to recovery and wellbeing.

“PTSD: Common Signs & Symptoms”

Knowing what to watch for can support earlier, more effective help. PTSD symptoms may show up as intrusion (flashbacks, nightmares), negative mood/cognition (guilt, shame, loss of interest), hyperarousal (irritability, sleep disruption), and occupational indicators (numbing on calls, burnout). Recognition + peer support + timely referral can make a meaningful difference.

“1 in 10 first responders report PTSD.” (Texas A&M University, 2025)

PTSD is common, measurable, and treatable—and early support can change outcomes. First responders face repeated exposure to trauma, which is why organizations benefit from strong peer support, education, and clear pathways to care. Let’s keep the conversation going and make support easier to access.
